Christian Werner (Bishop)
Christian Werner (born December 27, 1943 in Gogolin , today Poland ) is a Roman Catholic bishop and emeritus military bishop of Austria .
Life
After graduating from high school, he worked as a post office clerk, graduated from the Theresian Military Academy and was accepted into the Austrian armed forces as a career officer . Only later did he answer the call to become a priest. He was ordained priest on June 29, 1977 in St. Pölten .
From 1977 to 1980 he worked as a military pastor in St. Pölten.
Pope John Paul II appointed him titular bishop of Aeca in Apulia in 1992 and appointed him coadjutor - military bishop of Austria. The then military ordinary , Alfred Kostelecky , donated him his episcopal ordination on February 2, 1992 in St. George's Cathedral in Wiener Neustadt . Co- consecrators were the retired military bishop Franz Žak and the bishop of Sankt Pölten , Kurt Krenn . His motto is: "Christ Pax Nostra" (Christ is our peace). In 1992 he was appointed vicar general of the military by Alfred Kostelecky to succeed Karl Gindl , who was succeeded by Rudolf Schütz in 1994 .
On February 22, 1994 Werner succeeded the deceased Bishop Alfred Kostelecky as a military ordinary and was transferred by the Pope to the titular diocese of Wiener Neustadt on October 11, 1997 . The Episcopal Church is St. George's Cathedral in Wiener Neustädter Burg ( Theresian Military Academy ).
Werner belongs to the Teutonic Order as a familiare and has been a member of the Catholic student association Ö.KaV Theresiana in the ÖCV since 1965, and of the Catholic student association K.ö.St.V. since 1993. Kreuzenstein Vienna in the MKV and since 2017 the Catholic student association K.ö.St.V. Austria-Purkersdorf in the MKV .
In October 2013 it became known that Werner had submitted his resignation to Pope Francis for health reasons . On April 16, 2015, Pope Francis accepted his resignation and appointed Werner Freistetter as his successor.
