Life

Johann Baptist Rößler, born in 1850 in Niederschrems in the Waldviertel, as the son of a farmer, entered the seminary of the diocese of St. Pölten in 1870 and studied at the philosophical-theological home school there. On July 19, 1874, he was ordained a priest in St. Pölten by Bishop Matthäus Binder and then worked in pastoral care. In 1882 he became cathedral curate in St. Pölten, in 1884 Rößler became supplent and in 1885 professor of church history at the home teaching institution in St. Pölten. Sent to the Anima in Rome in 1887 , he received his doctorate in philosophy and theology in Rome in 1889. After his return in the same year he took over the leadership of the St. Pölten seminary as alumnate director. In 1890 he became papal secret chamberlain and in 1891 he was appointed cathedral capitular.

Appointed Bishop of St. Pölten by Emperor Franz Joseph I on January 5, 1894 , he was preconized by the Pope on April 10, 1894 and on June 10 in Vienna by Cardinal Archbishop Anton Josef Gruscha with the assistance of Bishop Franz Maria of Linz Doppelbauer and the Auxiliary Bishop of Vienna Eduard Angerer consecrated. On June 13, 1894, he was enthroned in St. Pölten. On June 10, 1899 he was appointed papal assistant to the throne and house prelate. Until the end of the monarchy, the seat and vote in the Lower Austrian state parliament were associated with the bishopric .

Although he was expected to strengthen the conservatives, Bishop Roessler supported, albeit moderately, the modern mass party of the Christian Socials, which was being established . To renew church life, he organized major events such as the Diocesan Catholic Day in 1905 and convened the first diocesan synod in 1908. In the same year, the fourth Lower Austrian Catholic Day took place in St. Pölten. During his episcopate from 1903 to 1905, a second boys' seminar was built in Melk - next to Seitenstetten - and in 1910 the church building association and the Catholic Volksbund were founded.

Bishop Roessler found it difficult to come to terms with the new political and social circumstances after the First World War . In 1919 he received the pallium . In 1921 he first appointed a vicar general, Josef Gruber , a colleague from the professorships of the home school , in accordance with the requirements of the new canon law (CIC) of 1917 . In 1924 he fell ill and was only able to carry out his duties with difficulty until his death. He died in early 1927 at the age of 77.
