Josef Gruber (Vicar General)

Josef Gruber (born February 16, 1848 in Wielands ; † June 12, 1929 in St. Pölten ) was an Austrian theologian and vicar general of the diocese of St. Pölten .

Life

After graduating from high school in Krems an der Donau in 1868, Gruber entered the St. Pölten seminary, studied at the Philosophical-Theological Home School and was ordained a priest in 1872. After a two-year chaplaincy in Schrems , he completed a doctorate at the Frintaneum in Vienna from 1874 to 1879 . He received his doctorate in theology in 1879 and was appointed curator of the cathedral in St. Pölten on his return . In 1880 he became supplent and in 1881 professor for fundamental theology and dogmatics at the home school of St. Pölten. From 1894 to 1903 he was at the same time the reign of the seminary and from 1902 to 1925 the prorector of the Thomistic teaching institute established by Bishop Johannes Baptist Rößler . Appointed to the cathedral chapter in 1897 , he became provost of the cathedral in 1917 . From 1908 to 1914 he was temporarily, then from 1921 until the death of Bishop Rößler's general vicar of the diocese. In addition, he was an official at the diocesan court from 1918 to 1926 .
