The Orthopedic Hospital Gersthof was a hospital of the City of Vienna in the Viennese districts of Hernals and Währing . It has been closed since May 31, 2019 after the Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology moved to the newly built North Hospital .

Location and architecture

The main building and most of the hospital's garden are located in the Hernals part of the 17th district of the same name. Only the detached administration building northwest of it is located in the eponymous district of Gersthof in the 18th district of Währing.

The facility is a major work of the architects Alfred Mautner and Johann Rothmüller . The monumental main building combines elements of the late Art Nouveau , Art Deco and expressive styles. This unusual shape is related to that of the Vienna Amalienbad . On the main front there is a porch with arcades , while the garden front is characterized by a large loggia . A pavilion is attached to the left and right. The foyer is completely tiled with Wienerberger ceramics. In the garden there is a large plastic mother and child from the construction period.

history

The Orthopedic Hospital Gersthof was built between 1924 and 1926 as a maternity hospital for the Viennese merchants . The building was later acquired by the Brothers of Mercy and named “St. Augustine Hospital ”. These in turn sold the property to the municipality of Vienna in 1940. The hospital served as a military hospital for a short time, but was originally dedicated as a maternity hospital before the end of the war.

Due to the decline in the birth rate, the hospital slowly lost its character and in 1972 the orthopedic university clinic was made available for the first time with thirty beds. The character of the hospital has now changed, from July 1975 the orthopedic branch of the university clinic became a separate department. The gynecological beds were gradually abandoned entirely. Finally, after the opening of the 2nd orthopedic department, the facility was renamed “Orthopedic Hospital of the City of Vienna - Gersthof”. The orthopedic hospital became an internationally known special hospital for orthopedics . The operation as a hospital was discontinued on May 31, 2019, from June 11, 2019 the orthopedic departments have moved to the newly built North Hospital in Floridsdorf .
