brothers of Mercy

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As Brothers of Mercy many are male order within the Catholic Church called. They are fraternities whose members are mainly active in the care of the sick and the elderly . Most of these communities live according to the rule of St. Augustine and date from the 19th century.

General

The Brothers of Mercy are a small religious community, but the number of people they employ is more than 50,000 worldwide, most of whom work in hospitals. This is because they see the nursing of the sick and the elderly as their most important task.

Fraternities

However, the designation "Brothers of Mercy" alone cannot clearly be assigned to an order. Several congregations have given themselves this name. In Germany these are above all the "Barmherzigen Brüder von Maria-Hilf" ( Trier ) and the Bavarian Order Province of the "Merciful Brothers of St. John of God" ( Munich ).

Order Province

During the provincial chapter, the new provincial superior is elected by the provincial councils. The Provincial is supported in his leadership, by the Order Province, by the four Provincial Councils. The term of office of the Provincial and the Provincial Definitory is four years.

  • Brother Seraphim Schorer, 1st Provincial Council
  • Brother Ermerich Steigerwald, 2nd Provincial Council
  • Brother Bernhard Binder, 3rd Provincial Council
  • Father Thomas Väth, 4th Provincial Council
