history

Building of the first hospital of the Brothers of Mercy in Hadamar

The founder of the congregation, Br. Ignatius Lötschert, was born on August 4th, 1820 in the former municipality of Höhr, now part of Höhr-Grenzhausen , in the Westerwald . After completing his business apprenticeship, he wanted to do charitable work in nursing , and he found a great supporter in Limburg Bishop Peter Josef Blum . After studying nursing with the Alexian Order in Aachen and looking for like-minded people in the Westerwald, Br. Ignatius and the other members of the community stayed in Dernbach from October 1855. There they received spiritual instruction from the spiritual of the community of poor servants of Jesus Christ , Father Wittayer. On June 29, 1856, the first five brothers were dressed in the chapel of Wittayer's mother house there . They made their temporary profession on November 7, 1858 before Bishop Blum in the chapel of the Limburg St. Vincent Hospital. The Congregation of the Brothers of Mercy of Montabaur was founded. The motto of the order is Caritas Christi urget nos (“The love of Christ urges us”, 2 Cor 5,14  EU ).

The first settlement was in Hadamar , where the community's first hospital was maintained from 1856 to 1862, and then from 1860 in Montabaur , which eventually became the motherhouse of the congregation. Later other branches were added, for example in 1891 in the Bonifatius city of Fulda or, for example, in Dorsten with the Maria Lindenhof. There handicapped people were cared for up to the " monastery tower " of the National Socialist regime. In the course of the morality trials against religious members and priests under National Socialism , twelve Brothers of Mercy from the Trier branch were convicted in 1937. Further convictions were also made for alleged foreign exchange offenses.

coat of arms

The order has its own coat of arms, the blazon in silver shows a continuous red bar cross, topped with an open green pomegranate with golden seeds and calyx, in the upper corner in blue a blessing Savior in a red robe with a gold-red cross nimbus . The red cross in silver is the coat of arms of Kurtrier, the pomegranate indicates Granada, the place of origin of the Brothers of Mercy of St. John of God .
