The Vienna Gersthof stop is on the border between Gersthof and Weinhaus and is the central traffic junction in Vienna's 18th district, Währing . It was originally a railway station of Vienna steam rail in high position opened and managed by the now S-Bahn operated S45. The station, since the task of the freight only a stop without course, is as well as large sections of the suburban line under monument protection ( list entry ).

history

The eastern reception building, on the left in the picture, is completely missing in 1981.

The Gersthof station, like the entire light rail system designed by the architect Otto Wagner , was completed in October 1895 and opened on May 11, 1898, in the course of the opening of the suburban line. After the end of the First World War , operations had to be reduced in 1918 due to a lack of coal. In the 1920s, the Wiental, Danube Canal and Belt Lines of the Stadtbahn were taken over by the City of Vienna, but not the suburban line, which remained with the Commission for Transport Systems in Vienna . Regular passenger traffic ceased in 1932. In the following years there was only sporadic passenger traffic, the route was mainly used for freight traffic. Towards the end of the Second World War , the station was badly damaged by bomb hits. When it was finally agreed in the 1980s to reactivate the suburb line, the entire east facade of the station had to be removed and completely rebuilt. The reception building and the two outer platforms have largely been preserved in the original Otto Wagner architecture and are under monument protection . On May 31, 1987, the renovated suburban line was reopened and integrated into the Vienna S-Bahn network as the S45.

By June 2016, the stop was completely renovated while operations continued. The work included, among other things, the repair of the external facades and interiors as well as the renewal of the lighting and the wayfinding system. In order to improve the barrier-free accessibility, parts of the historical access doors were automated and the two elevator systems were renewed.

Location and facilities

The stop extends from Gentzgasse to Währinger Strasse and is located between Gersthofer Strasse and Simonygasse. The central reception building can be reached from the last two streets mentioned. The station has two side platforms with one entrance each. To the north of it, the suburban line dips into the small Türkenschanz tunnel. The Türkenschanzpark and the Vienna University Observatory are also nearby .

The trains on the S45 rapid transit line run every 10 minutes from Monday to Friday; every 15 minutes in the evening, Saturday, Sunday and public holidays in the direction of Vienna Hütteldorf and Handelskai .

The platforms are barrier-free, but step-free access to the reception building is only possible from Simonygasse. Because the platforms are not raised, it is not possible to board the trains at ground level. The Talent- type trains used as planned on the S45 have ramps on board with which the height difference can be overcome. The predecessors of the 4020 series, which are often used as replacements, are not barrier-free. On the ground floor of the reception building there are ticket machines and a coffee house with an adjoining outdoor dining area; A kiosk is also operated in the former ticket office.
