The Johnstraße station is a multi-storey, underground station on the Vienna underground line U3 in the 15th district of Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus . Name giver is the 1894 and 1912 after the Austrian military Franz Xaver von John (1815–1876) named Johnstrasse.

station

The structure was handed over to its intended use on September 3, 1994 when the third section of the U3 was opened. Until December 5, 1998, this was the provisional western terminus of the U3.

The station is located 21 meters below the level of Meiselstraße between Johnstraße and Kröllgasse. It has a central platform, ten escalators and four barrier-free entrances by elevator . Exits lead in the direction of the Meiselmarkt , to the Wiener Wasserwelt (a pedestrian zone with several fountains), to the Hütteldorfer Strasse and into the Meiselstrasse. It is possible to change to tram line 49 in the direction of Hütteldorf or Ring and to bus lines 10A in the direction of Niederhofstraße or Heiligenstadt and 12A in the direction of Längenfeldgasse or Gablenzgasse. Close to the station (with direct access) is the Meiselmarkt market and shopping center housed in an old water tank, the water world on Kardinal-Rauscher-Platz, the Hütteldorfer Strasse shopping street and, after extensive public discussions, the one in Johnstrasse in December 2007 opened, popularly known as the “Punkerhaus”, the “Johnstrasse House for Young Adults” of the municipality of Vienna.

Design

On the mezzanine floor of the station there has been a series of pictures called “transmission” by printmaker Michael Schneider , consisting of 43 black and white pictures , since April 2010 . As a template, the artist used digital photographs that show the roof lines of houses along the U3 line. Some of the graphics were created using classic gravure printing technology and some as wood printing. The images were digitized, exposed on screens, printed on metal sheets with enamel paint and then burned at 800 degrees.

In a corridor of the station to the Hütteldorfer Straße exit there is a large enamel mural. It is a modern replica of the watercolor Spring Parade on the Schmelz in 1897 by Felician Myrbach from the Army History Museum . The mural reminds us that there was an important parade ground on the nearby Schmelz .
