Felician Myrbach

Felician Myrbach (until 1919 Freiherr von Rheinfeld ; born February 19, 1853 in Zaleszczyki , † January 14, 1940 in Klagenfurt ) was an Austrian painter , graphic artist and book illustrator .

Myrbach attended the military academy from 1868 to 1871 , then was a draftsman at the Military Geography Institute and a drawing teacher at the Vienna Cadet School. He also studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts .

From 1881 to 1897 Myrbach lived in Paris as a book illustrator, where he illustrated the works of Alphonse Daudet and Victor Hugo, among others . From 1897 he taught as a professor of illustration at the Vienna School of Applied Arts . From 1899 to 1905 he was its director. Although he was more inclined to realism and military subjects , Myrbach opened the "Institute of Viennese Modernism" and won Josef Hoffmann , Alfred Roller , Kolo Moser , Rudolf von Larisch , Carl Otto Czeschka and Franz Cizek as teachers . In 1903 Myrbach was president of the Vienna Secession , in 1905 he resigned with the Klimt group and retired due to disagreements. He then lived again in Paris until 1914, during the First World War in Spain . In 1936 he returned to Austria.
