Oskar Matulla
Oskar Matulla (born November 4, 1900 in Vienna ; † October 13, 1982 ibid) was an Austrian graphic artist , painter and writer .
Life
Oskar Matulla was born in Vienna in 1900 as the son of a master locksmith. After elementary and community school, he attended the teacher training institute and from 1918–1920 the arts and crafts school in Vienna with Franz Cizek . After working as an assistant at Cizek, he worked as a drawing teacher in Bruck an der Leitha . In 1927 he was again at the arts and crafts school, now with Erich Mallina, to deal with the technique of wood engraving . In 1929 he became a member of the Central Association of Fine Artists of Austria and, after the annexation of Austria, a member of the Reich Chamber of Fine Arts . From 1940 he was used again as an art teacher.
After the Second World War , he stayed in Hengersberg near Passau until 1947 , where he became a member of the Danube Forest Group - a loose association of visual artists who lived and worked in the area or the catchment area of the Bavarian Forest. In 1947 he returned to Lower Austria, lived in Perchtoldsdorf and gave up teaching . From 1948 to 1950 he was studying again at the Graphic Education and Research Institute and in 1949 with Josef Dobrowsky at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna . In 1955 he was in Paris at the Mourlot Studios for further training in the lithographic disciplines.
In 1950 he became a member of the Vienna Secession and in 1956 its vice-president. He also ran painting courses at adult education centers in Vienna. In 1964 he was the founder of Group 64 as an association of Lower Austrian artists, this group existed until 1972. He was also a member of the Wiener Neustädter Artists' Association .
In addition to oil paintings and watercolors, graphics played a decisive role in Matulla's work, using a wide variety of techniques such as linoleum and woodcut, copper or stone printing. The works were carried out as: "figurative style, reduced to simple forms, enriched by small cubist forms".
The City of Vienna named Oskar-Matulla-Gasse in Wiener Neustadt after the artist.
