Rudolf von Larisch

Rudolf Larisch , 1866 to 1919 by Larisch (* 1. April 1856 in Verona , Empire of Austria ; † 24. March 1934 in Vienna ) was an Austrian typographer , type designer , graphic designer and university lecturer .

Life

Rudolf von Larisch studied at the arts and crafts school in Vienna. After initially working as an official in the Austrian Ministry of the Interior, he was appointed to teach ornamental writing and heraldry at the School of Applied Arts in 1902 , where he was awarded the title of professor in 1905 . From 1910 he worked at the Graphic Education and Research Institute and from 1920 to 1931 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna . His main interest was the further development of the teaching of font design and font design.

He was married to Emilie geb. Altmann, who died in Vienna in 1913 at the age of 45 after a long illness. From this marriage he had the son Viktor (died 1946). It was not until 1931 that he married again. His second wife was the type artist, book designer and commercial artist Hertha geb. Ramsauer (1897–1972). He was buried in an honorary grave in the Vienna Central Cemetery (group 30 D, row 1, no. 30).

Von Larisch was a founding member of the Austrian Werkbund . Larisch designed the following fonts:

In his free time he devoted himself to sailing and canoeing and developed one of the first canoe variants commonly used in continental Europe .

He was buried in an honorary grave at the Vienna Central Cemetery .

In 1961, Larischgasse in Vienna- Donaustadt (22nd district) was named after him.
