The Meiselmarkt is a market on the Schmelz in the 15th Viennese district of Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus . It is located together with the Johnstraße subway station in a former water container belonging to the Vienna water supply . It is named after the adjacent Meiselstrasse , which was named after the Rudolfsheimer honorary citizen Johann Meisel.

history

Built in 1905 as a temporary measure, the market was expanded to double its area and paved with asphalt in 1913, whereupon it was officially sanctioned. In the course of the construction of the Technical Museum , the Rudolfsheim Central Market was closed and relocated to the Meiselmarkt.

With a resolution of the Vienna City Council on June 26, 1992, the Meiselmarkt location was sold to Wiener Städtische Allgemeine Versicherung , which planned the construction of an underground car park, a market with a shopping center and a residential complex there. After two arson attacks in July 1995 and another in January 1996, the old stalls of the previously abandoned market were demolished. A residential complex was built on the property.

On November 10, 1995, Mayor Michael Häupl officially opened the new Meiselmarkt, which had been relocated to the preserved part of the melting water reservoir built between 1870 and 1873 and expanded between 1878 and 1879, which was integrated into the newly built building complex. At this new location, which has been in operation since April 3, 1995, the Vienna Market Office acts as the tenant of Wiener Städtische Allgemeine Versicherung and in turn rents out the market stalls to the market parties.

The market itself was moved to the storey below Hütteldorfer Straße. As a result, the market lost much of its atmosphere - today it is more reminiscent of a shopping center. For the residents of the 15th district, the Meiselmarkt is still an important shopping place where you can meet the needs of everyday life.

Expansion project

From 2007 the owner had plans to build a residential building over the open space on the former water tank, behind the listed old valve chamber. This project was criticized because of the loss of the green space in the district (which was no longer publicly accessible after an accident). The construction work has been carried out since the end of January 2012, and some market stalls had to be temporarily relocated due to the necessary reinforcement of the supporting columns in the former water tank. The shopping center above the market, which had been largely empty for a long time, was revitalized by the move into an electronics store.

Transport links

The Meiselmarkt is connected to public transport by the U3 station Johnstraße, which opened in September 1994, the tram line 49 and the bus lines 10A and 12A.
