In the course of the extension of the U3 subway line to the then terminus, the Johnstraße station, which opened in September 1994, the surface was redesigned between Johnstraße and Kardinal-Rauscher-Platz in the mid-1990s by the architects Rudolf Guttmann and Rupert Falkner. With the help of the sculptors Waltrud Viehböck, Osamu Nakajima and Hans Muhr, the Vienna Water World was created with a total of seven different fountains. The location of the water world is also a reference to the former Schmelz water tank of the Viennese water supply , which today houses the Meiselmarkt and the Johnstraße subway station and whose old valve chamber has been preserved.

In the area of the water world, so-called water world festivals take place annually, which function as cross-cultural and cross-generational Grätzl festivals . At the beginning of 2009 it became known that a redesign or redesign of the water world was planned. The reason given was the ongoing high costs for cleaning and maintenance, which result from regular soiling and damage. In 2012 the water world festival did not take place at the water world, but in the Vogelweidpark.

Planned redesign in 2015

The evaluation of a survey of 783 passers-by carried out between June 4 and 17, 2013 on behalf of the area management GB * 6/14/15 at Kardinal-Rauscher Platz and Leopold-Mistinger Platz showed that 77.4% felt comfortable at the square . Almost 80% described the togetherness on the pitch as “good” or “ok”. Most stated that they used the water world primarily to “sit / relax”, “cross” or “meet people”. 64.1% of the respondents could not answer the question of whether the square in its open character takes on the function of a Grätzlzentrum , while it was answered in the affirmative by 25.2% and negated by 10.7%. Despite the general satisfaction, an overwhelming majority (81.1%) were in favor of changes; only 17.4% wanted to leave the water world as it is. Many respondents wanted “more green in the form of grass, flowers and bushes” and thought that a public toilet facility would make sense. Suggestions for more frequent cleaning of the fountains and an enlargement of the children's playground also met with approval. The respondents who stated that their mother tongue was German (50.8%, compared to 16.6% Turkish , 16.4% Bosnian-Croatian-Serbian and 16.2% other languages) tended to rate the relationship with one another as poorer. This group also found a higher average age and a tendency to cross the pedestrian zone around Meiselstrasse rather than to stay there longer. Younger respondents with a migration background in particular gave a more positive assessment . For this group, who tended to stay longer in the square, the preservation of the fountain systems was significantly more important. Statistically, female respondents only felt insignificantly more uncomfortable than male respondents.

In general, the interviews showed that the respondents wanted the open spaces and the focus on water, more green (trees and bushes), more frequent cleaning and new play equipment in a larger playground to be maintained. The area management intended to have created a model for the redesign by the end of 2013 and to have concrete plans for 2014 followed, which are to be implemented in 2015. Since the evaluation of the survey showed that the Grätzl actually works quite well, a complete redesign will not be carried out.

Fountain

  • Water basins A and B, pavilion : The fountain system, which consists of two separate water basins and a pavilion , is located between the Meiselmarkt and the eastern reception building of the underground station. The larger of the two fountain basins is adjacent to the ship-shaped pavilion, which houses a restaurant. The steel figures nine double ellipses were created by the sculptor Waltrud Viehböck.
  • Water seating area : Next to the staircase leading down to the Meiselmarkt is the fountain called "water seating area", the border of which can be used for sitting.
  • Play fountain : The fountain is located on Meiselstrasse between Kröllgasse and Selzergasse. The flow of the water over the stylized "barrages" can be influenced by flaps.
  • Water arc : The water arc is also in Meiselstrasse, to the side of the Rudolfsheim parish church. At the wider end of the almost L-shaped fountain system, six blue arches are mounted, between which the water jets pour into the basin.
  • Memorial : The fountain was created by the Japanese-Austrian sculptor Osamu Nakajima and is located in front of the Rudolfsheimer parish church on Kardinal-Rauscher-Platz. Numerous water nozzles are integrated into the two huge granite steles, the main jet pours into the artificial pond in front of it.
  • Berlin drinking fountain : The Berlin drinking fountain is located at the so-called resting place in the pergola on Kardinal-Rauscher-Platz. The bronze fountain decorated with tiles is a gift from the city of Berlin and, as a design by Hans Muhr, a counterpart to his Viennese drinking fountain, so to speak .
  • Tree of Life : The conclusion is the tree of life created by the "water sculptor" Hans Muhr. The colorful sculpture contains a photovoltaic system and is located at the eastern end of Kardinal-Rauscher-Platz, just before Huglgasse.
