Osamu Nakajima (born March 12, 1937 in Kaijyo near Nagasaki , Japan ; † April 2013 in Langenstein ) was a Japanese- Austrian stone sculptor .

Life

Osamu Nakajima's studio in Gusen

Nakajima graduated from the Musashino Academy of Fine Arts , Tokyo , in 1962 with Yoshitatsu Yanagihara .

The artist, who is married to Sakuyo, stayed in 1969 on the occasion of a visit to one of the stone carving symposia in Mauthausen-Gusen in Upper Austria . After moving from Japan in 1970, he lived and worked with his family in Langenstein for a long time , and later in Linz.

In 1974 he became a member of the Society of Fine Artists Austria, Künstlerhaus Wien and from 1977 he belonged to the artists' association MAERZ in Linz .

In 1982 he received Austrian citizenship.

Works

Vienna Water World memorial (1993)

His monochrome stone sculptures are based on basic geometric shapes and rational principles of order, which, however, find new and unfamiliar solutions.

He is one of the first artists who were also able to realize pure abstraction for sculptures in public spaces . Examples of this are fountains for the Vienna Water World (1993) and in front of the Linz City Hall (1985). Works in public space and in public collections can be found in various Austrian, Swiss, Japanese and German cities.

The art critics saw Osamu Nakajima's work in tension with meditative and constructive tendencies on the one hand and the development of European stone carving on the other hand, stressing its relevant individual position.
