Yanagihara Yoshitatsu ( Japanese 柳 原 義 達 ; born March 21, 1910 in Kobe ( Hyōgo Prefecture ); died November 11, 2004 ) was a Japanese sculptor of the Shōwa period .

life and work

Yanagihara Yoshiatsu was born in Kobe in 1910 and completed his training as a sculptor at the "Tōkyō Bijutsu gakkō", the forerunner of today's Geidai , in 1936 . As a student, he exhibited works at the Kokuga-kai (国画 会) exhibitions, of which he became a member in 1937. He withdrew from her in the same year and became a founding member of the sculpting department of Shinseisaku-kyōkai (新 製作 協会).

In 1951 Yanagihara exhibited the work entitled “Woman's Head” (女 の 首, Onna no kubi) at the 1st  São Paulo Biennale . The following year he went to France and continued his education at the Salon de Mai under E. Auricoste . In 1957 he returned to Japan and exhibited at the “4. International Art Exhibition ”(国際 日本 展示会) the sculpture“ Nude of a Black ”(黒 人 裸 婦, Kokujin Rafu). In the following year he won the first “Takamura Kōtarō Prize” (高 村 幸 太郎 賞) and in the same year an award for the sculpture “Sitting” (座 る, Suwaru) at the 3rd “Exhibition of Contemporary Art in Japan” (現代日本 の 美術展). In 1973 his sculpture “Wegweiser” (道 標, Dōhyō (鳩, pigeon)) - “carrier pigeon” - won first prize in a competition for outdoor sculptures in the city of Nagano, and in the following year for another carrier pigeon sculpture won the 5th prize. Nakahara Teijirō Prize.

Abroad, Yanagihara was represented at the 13th  Venice Biennale , the “3. International Exhibition of Modern Sculptures ”in Paris, at the“ 9. International Exhibition of Sculptures ”in Amsterdam and other places.

Yanagihara was one of the major sculptors of the Shōwa era with sculptures that show her French influence. His series of pigeon sculptures also includes the “woman holding a pigeon” (鳩 を 持 つ gehört, Hato o motsu Onna). - Yanagihara's sculptures can be seen in many public places. Examples include a woman statue in front of the Tokyo Prefectural Administration building , a standing woman in front of the Kanagawa Prefecture Museum of Modern Art ( 神奈川 県 立 近代 美術館Kanagawa kenritsu kindai bijutsukan ) in Kamakura , and a seated woman in the city of Ube . - One of his students was Osamu Nakajima .

In 1996, Yanagihara was recognized by the state as a " Person of Special Cultural Merit ".
