The Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building ( Japanese 東京 都 庁 舎 , Tōkyō-to Chōsha or Tōkyō Tochō-sha , dt. "Government building of Tokyo Prefecture") is a building complex in the district of Nishi-Shinjuku in Shinjuku , in which the administration of the prefecture was completed Tokyo (English self-designation Tokyo Metropolitan Government ) has its seat. Often it is also called Tokyo City Hall or “ Tokyo City Hall ”, which is incorrect as Tokyo is not an independent municipal unit.

The building planned by the architect Kenzō Tange consists of three parts. The largest of these is Tokyo Metropolitan Main Building No. 1, which was the tallest skyscraper in Tokyo from 1991 to the completion of the Tokyo Midtown Tower in 2006 , with 48 floors above ground and 243 meters . Above the 33rd floor it forks into two parts and is reminiscent of a Gothic cathedral . The Tokyo Metropolitan Main Building No. 2, the 37 above ground and - like the Main Building No. 1 - has three underground floors, and the Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly Building (seven floors above ground and one underground floor).

Construction began in 1988 and the publicly funded construction costs amounted to 157 billion yen (approx. € 1 billion).

The forerunner of the building was the old administration building of the Tokyo prefecture in Marunouchi, also built by Kenzo Tange in 1957 . The Tokyo International Forum has been in its place since 1996 .

The building is popularly referred to as Baburu no Tō ( バ ブ ル の 塔 ), which is on the one hand an allusion to the Tower of Babel , and on the other hand to the bubble economy . The play on words aims at the megalomania of the 80s.

In both towers there is a lookout point on the 45th floor that can be visited free of charge.
