Many of the skyscrapers of the famous Shinjuku skyline are in Nishi-Shinjuku.

Nishi-Shinjuku ( Japanese 西 新宿 , "West Shinjuku") is a district of the Shinjuku district of the Japanese prefecture of Tokyo . It is located in western Tokyo on the west side of Shinjuku Station . Before 1970, large parts of the district were called Tsunohazu ( 角 筈 ), part belonged to Kashiwagi, which otherwise largely corresponds to today's Kita-Shinjuku , a small part was formerly Yodobashi.

Nishi-Shinjuku is home to numerous skyscrapers, including the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building (formerly the tallest building in Tokyo and home to the prefectural administration ), the Shinjuku Park Tower and the Mode Gakuen Cocoon Tower, which was completed in 2008 . The district is divided into eight numbered quarters (chōme), in which 21,837 inhabitants lived in 15,205 households as of April 1, 2018. While the eastern areas at the station (1- and 2-chôme) are dominated by commercial and office buildings, some of which are connected by underground passages, residential areas are west of the central park Shinjuku .

The postal code of Nishi-Shinjuku is 160-0023. Neighboring districts are starting in the south in a clockwise direction: Yoyogi , Hatsudai and Honmachi in the Shibuya district , Yayoichō and Honchō in the Nakano district , and Kita-Shinjuku, Hyakuninchō, Kabukichō and Shinjuku in the Shinjuku district.

Since 1898, the water treatment plant Yodobashi ( 淀 橋 浄水 場 , Yodobashi jōsuijō ) was located in Tsunohazu , which supplied large parts of Tokyo. After this was moved to Higashimurayama in 1965 , Nishi-Shinjuku developed. In 1966, an underground passage was opened on the west side of Shinjuku Station, Tokyo's most important transportation hub. In 1971 the 47-story Keiō Plaza Hotel opened on the site of the former sewage treatment plant , which was soon followed by other high-rise buildings. In 1991, the building complex designed by Kenzō Tange for the prefectural government, which also houses the Tokyo Prefectural Parliament, was completed.
