history

Shinjuku was named after a post office set up around 1698 at Kōshū-kaidō , which led from Edo to Kai Province . Because of the residence of the Naitō clan from Shinano Province , the station was named "New Naitō Station" ( Naitō-Shinjuku ). It was along the road parallel to today's Shinjuku Gyoen (Naitōmachi) area.

During the establishment of modern local authorities, the city ( machi ) Naitō-Shinjuku was created here in 1889 , which was incorporated into the city of Tokyo in 1920 . After the dissolution of the city of Tokyo, the Shinjuku district was established in its current form in 1947. The Shinjuku district received its current boundaries in the 1970s.

Shinjuku's rapid development into one of the centers of Tokyo began with the opening of Shinjuku Station in 1885. Large shops and department stores opened near the station, especially during Tokyo's rapid growth in the first half of the 20th century.
