Fountain in Vienna
The public fountain in Vienna served ever since the Roman times, the water supply of the community and the firefighters in today's Austrian federal capital Vienna . In the course of time, the fountains were increasingly given a representative function and were accordingly elaborately designed.
history
The first fountains in public places in Vienna were built in the late Middle Ages and were mainly used for market operations and to improve fire fighting. Such a public well and a water pipe under the Tuchlauben were first mentioned in 1310 . From the 16th century, prestigious fountains that went beyond their functionality were also created. The oldest, still existing wells is 1,552 in Swiss Wing of the Hofburg built Schweizerhofbrunnen .
Vienna's water supply was gradually improved through the construction of water pipes . Today, for example, the Siebenbrunnen at Margaretner Siebenbrunnenplatz is a reminder of the construction of the Siebenbrunner Hofwasserleitung in 1562, the Isisbrunnen to the Albertinische Wasserleitung built in 1804 , the Austriabrunnen to the Kaiser-Ferdinands-Wasserleitung and the Hochstrahlbrunnen at Schwarzenbergplatz to the first Viennese spring water pipeline, which was completed in 1873 . The two fountains in the Rathauspark were first fed with spring water from the Second Vienna Spring Water Pipeline in 1910 .
Over time, the public fountains lost their original meaning, and at the same time the domestic fountains disappeared, of which there were around 10,000 in Vienna in the mid-19th century. One of the most famous Viennese house fountains is the one that, according to an old legend, was located in Schönlaterngasse in 1212 and was inhabited by a basilisk .
In the course of municipal housing campaigns, especially in the time of Red Vienna and in the 1950s, new municipal buildings were embellished with so-called art on the building , which among other things led to the construction of several fountains. In some fountains, especially those located in places frequented by tourists, the custom of throwing coins into the fountain basin was and is occasionally maintained, which was made popular by the film Three Coins in the Fountain from 1954 and the Trevi Fountain in Rome.
Today, Municipal Department 31 ( Wiener Wasser ) manages around 720 drinking fountains . Especially in the inner-city area of Vienna you will find numerous historical, mostly listed art and ornamental fountains, some of which are also looked after by MA 31.
Outside the urban area of Vienna, there are wells, especially in the catchment area of the two high spring water pipes, which are either owned by the city or have been dedicated or promoted by it. Along the first Viennese spring water pipeline, for example, there are three fountains on the grounds of the Neusiedl water reservoir, one of which is freely accessible, two further fountains in Kaiserbrunn and one on the main square of Neunkirchen. There are six such wells in the Wildalpen on the Second Vienna High Spring Water Pipeline.
