Herweghhof
The Herweghhof is a listed urban residential complex in Vienna - Margareten . It is located at Margaretengürtel 82-88.
Building description
The Herweghhof was built in 1926/27 by the architects Heinrich Schmid and Hermann Aichinger as a municipal residential complex. It was named after the political poet and German freedom poet Georg Herwegh . A plaque and a medallion of the poet are placed in the entrance area as a reminder.
The complex comprises 220 apartments and forms a unit with the neighboring Julius-Popp-Hof . Together with the nearby Metzleinstaler Hof and the Matteottihof , a striking city district was created in this area of Margaretens.
The long rows of arcades to the Gürtel , with the shops behind them, are remarkable . The difference in height between Gürtel and Siebenbrunnenfeldgasse was elegantly overcome by means of terraces . Also worth mentioning are the details such as lanterns, pergolas, knocking bars and the decorative bay windows of this municipal building.
In the green area between Julius-Popp-Hof and Herweghhof there is a fountain depicting a she-bear with her boy, by Hanna Gärtner from 1928.
