The Metzleinstaler Hof is a listed urban residential complex in Vienna . It is located in Margareten , the 5th district of Vienna, at Margaretengürtel 90–98.

Building description

The Metzleinstaler Hof was planned as a rental house after the First World War , but was completed as the first “real” municipal building in the City of Vienna under Mayor Jakob Reumann , based on a design by the architect Robert Kalesa . This community building had no corridor kitchens, but was equipped with direct light in all rooms and a kindergarten on the ground floor. The name of the building is reminiscent of the old field name Metzleinstal , first mentioned in 1305 , later Matzleinsdorf , the part of the 5th district in which the building is located.

In the years 1923/24 the second construction phase was completed by architect Hubert Gessner . This phase of construction is characterized by rich ceramic decorations in the form of colored majolica reliefs on windows and facades.

The complex, which now comprises 244 apartments , became the model for numerous later municipal buildings throughout Vienna, e. B. the staircases that are accessible from the courtyard.

A central bathing establishment and laundry, a kindergarten , a library , club rooms and an apprentice workshop were available as social facilities .

In the immediate vicinity of the Metzleinstaler Hof, the large community buildings Reumannhof , Matteottihof and Herweghhof were built in 1926/1927 . PR people therefore spoke of this belt section as the ring road of the proletariat .

The Metzleinstaler Hof was renovated between 1993 and 1996 and was awarded the city renewal award in 1997.

First community building

Notice board for the first real community building

The Metzleinstaler Hof was named, alternating with the Mareschsiedlung community housing complex (part of the Schmelz settlement and residential complex ) in the 15th district, as the first Viennese community building. Both were planned during the First World War and completed in 1919/20. A social democratic website on Red Vienna refers to the following facts:

  • The brochure for the opening of the Metzleinstalerhof begins with the words: The Metzleinstalerhof ... was built by the municipality of Vienna in two construction periods. The first part ... was started ... in 1919 and completed in the winter of 1920.
  • On the other hand, the Wiener Extrablatt on October 14, 1920 brought a drawing of the opening ceremony of the Mareschsiedlung.

The fact that the Metzleinstaler Hof is still run as the first “real” community building is due to the fact that - in contrast to the one-story allotment garden settlement in the 15th district - its structure and appearance correspond to the “typical” community building of Red Vienna.
