Matzleinsdorf is a neighborhood in the fifth Viennese district Margareten . The place from which the district emerged was one of the oldest known suburbs in Vienna.

Medieval development

The earliest documented mention goes back to the year 1136: An entry in the Klosterneuburg Salbuch documents the existence of a certain Otto von Mazilinestorf . The name Mazilinestorf is a reference to Mazilo , the founder of the settlement, the spelling changed over the centuries, up to the current form Matzleinsdorf (see table).

The suburb was still during the reign of the Babenberg , in Markgrafschaft Ostarrîchi and was free self of this family. It is assumed that the original town center was roughly between the area of today's Wiedner Hauptstraße 105, the former location of the old Florianikirche , and today's Margaretengürtel. At that time, an old Roman road ran at this point, which led over the Wienerberg and probably served as a settlement point. From the following centuries of the rule of the Habsburgs it is known that Matzleinsdorf in the beginning of the battles of the Hungarian king Matthias Corvinus against Friedrich III. which would later lead to the conquest of Vienna, was devastated by Hungarian troops in 1477.

Early modern age

A development that originated in the early modern Matzleinsdorf was the emergence of the later Laurenzergrund . It is known that in Matzleinsdorf there was a court of one of the oldest nuns in Vienna - the nuns of Maria Magdalena . We know about them that they had been resident at least in today's Alsergrund since the 13th century. Her monastery there, the Maria Magdalena Monastery, was mentioned in a document as early as 1239. During the 1st Turkish siege in 1529, however, it was destroyed by the Ottomans . A little later in 1533, the nuns decided to join the Laurenzerinnen, another Viennese order of nuns named after St. Lawrence of Rome , which had existed since the beginning of the 14th century. This led to the fact that the farm in Matzleinsdorf also came into the possession of the Laurenzerinnen, was soon enlarged and subsequently became an independent suburb, the Laurenzergrund.

The way to incorporation

The Vienna suburbs were largely destroyed again by the second Turkish siege in 1683. At the turn of the 18th century they began to rebuild them. To avoid future devastation, a separate line wall was built around the suburbs around 1704 . Matzleinsdorf was also separated from the surrounding area by a rampart called the Matzleinsdorfer line .

Vienna's population grew rapidly during this period. The magistrate led from the 18th century reinforced basic purchases in the countryside through and so it happened that even the suburb Matzleinsdorf 1727 passed into the possession of the city. In order to be able to manage the suburbs acquired by the city of Vienna within the lines, called suburbs , more easily and because the provisional municipal law passed on March 17, 1849 required suburbs to form a single local municipality with the actual city , their incorporation as municipal districts was established in 1850 decided. The whole of Matzleinsdorf was combined with several other suburbs to form the 4th district, Wieden . But the Wieden had a strong social and economic gradient, so that in 1861 it was decided to split off the southwestern part, in which Matzleinsdorf was also located, into its own new 5th district, Margareten .

In 1874, the municipality then separated administratively from Margareten the district area , which was formerly part of the suburb of Matzleinsdorf and was delimited in front of the Linienwall, instead it became part of the newly founded first Vienna outer district, the new 10th district, Favoriten .
