Hubert Gessner

Hubert Johann Karl Gessner (born October 20, 1871 in Wallachian Klobouk ; † January 29, 1943 in Vienna ) was an Austrian architect .

Life

Hubert Gessner worked and learned in Otto Wagner's office in 1898 and 1899 . From 1907 to 1912 he worked primarily with his brother Franz Gessner . After the end of the First World War , he soon became one of the leading architects for residential buildings in Vienna. During this time, the Karl-Seitz-Hof and the Reumannhof were established . With the “Anschluss” of Austria to the German Reich in 1938, however, he was banned from working and died during the Second World War .

One of the most famous works by Hubert Gessner is the Favoriten workers' home, built in the Art Nouveau style between 1901 and 1902 . During this activity he became friends with Victor Adler . However , he did not become a member of the Social Democratic Party .

According to Werner Kilitschka (1984), the house is "a previously absolutely modern building in the sense of the new objectivity that has now been consistently expressed artistically". The sculptural jewelry on the building comes from Anton Hanak.
