Life

Franz Gessner was the younger brother of the architect Hubert Gessner . He attended the State Trade School in Brno before studying with Otto Wagner at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna from 1903 to 1906 . Study trips took him to Northern Italy in 1905, to Italy and Spain from 1906 to 1907 and to Germany and Denmark in 1913. In 1906 he had won a state travel grant with the Rome Prize.

Franz Gessner initially worked together with his brother in his studio until 1912. After that he was often active in industrial construction, where he had the company Warchalowski, Eissler & Co. as a major customer. He was also active in residential construction, but was unable to receive any commissions from the City of Vienna in the interwar period. It was not until the 1930s that he built several residential buildings for the Assanierungsfonds in Vienna.
