Building description

The Matteottihof was built in 1926/27 under Mayor Karl Seitz by the architects Heinrich Schmid and Hermann Aichinger as a municipal residential complex. As a symbol of international solidarity in the fight against fascism, it was named after Giacomo Matteotti , an Italian opponent of Mussolini who was murdered by supporters of the dictator. The complex comprises 452 apartments and, together with the nearby Metzleinstaler Hof and the Herweghhof in this area of Margaretens, forms a striking city district. The Matteottihof does not have a facade facing the Margaretengürtel , but forms a kind of city gate with the monumental entrance gate above Fendigasse. At this passage there is a bronze relief by Matteotti (it was removed in 1934 and recreated in 1966).

Originally, the community building had infrastructure facilities such as a laundry , a bathing establishment , a youth welfare office , a mother's advice center, a day care center as well as numerous shops and bars.

Also worth mentioning are the various lighting fixtures in the inner courtyards and the facade design with round oriels and corner loggias.
