Elberberg Castle

The Elbersberg Castle is a neo-classical palace with farm and English Garden in Naumburg district Elbenberg in northern Hesse , on the northern slope of the Hardt head .

history

A previous Gothic castle was first mentioned in a document in 1235. It was sold to the St. Alban Abbey near Mainz in 1266 . In 1386 the lords of Elben received the castle and the villages of Elben and Elberberg as fiefs.

The stone annex, which is still preserved today, dates from the 15th century with a round, external staircase built in 1583. Building materials from an older gate building were used for the construction; Inscription stones with Gothic minuscules from 1413 were found in the so-called Old Castle. In 1535 the male line of the von Elben family died out, and the estate fell to their heirs . First it came to Jakob von Taubenheim and then in inheritance to the Lords of Boyneburg- Hohenstein and the Lords of Buttlar . In 1559 the Boyneburgers sold their share of the castle to the von Buttlar family, who have owned it ever since.

The oldest buildings on the estate were built in the 18th century. In 1739 the rentier was added , in 1752 the caretaker's house and in 1768 the cowshed. In 1752 a half-timbered house was built in the farm yard. The Hessian chamberlain and well-known forester Rudolph von Buttlar (1802–1875), who took over the management of the property in 1824, had today's classicist castle built. First of all, the south building, the so-called glass house, was built in 1834. The north building was then expanded and the connecting wing with the knight's hall was completed around 1860/61 .

English garden

On the southern slope of the Schlossberg are the remains of an English garden , which was created there in place of an originally Baroque garden with an Italian terrace. In the garden there is an old tree population, a pavilion, two ornamental ponds and a water basin. Botanical specialties are a sequoia ( giant sequoia ) and a ginkgo from the time of the first planting.

Part of the “E4” hiking trail runs along the western edge of the garden and the western castle pond.
