Nachtigallenburg (Hesse)
Nightingale Castle

The Nachtigallenburg is a defunct Niederungsburg in a side valley west of the Viesebeck district of the city of Wolfhagen in the Kassel district in Hesse .

history

The castle was probably built after 1260 by Landgrave Heinrich I of Hesse as a protective castle against the Waldecker and probably destroyed by fire in 1293, as were the castles of Helfenberg and Rodersen . It was never mentioned in chronicles and documents, only in the Wolfenhagener Salbuch from 1537 the Nachtigallenburg appeared.

At the end of the 19th century, the castle's basement vaults are said to have been exposed during drainage work, and in the 19th century the remains of the ruins were removed for road construction work.

The castle stable of the former castle complex, which was probably a tower hill castle (moth), only shows the remainder of a circular ring wall .
