Geographical location

The castle ruins are located in the northern part of the Habichtswald Nature Park on the Kleiner Gudenberg, a densely wooded basalt cone that rises almost 2.3 kilometers (km) west of the core town of Zierenberg and almost 2.3 km east-southeast of its Oberelsungen district . history

The castle was first mentioned in a document in 1175, but was probably built during the time of the Hessian Count Werner IV . It was the Mainz fiefdom of the Lords of Gudenberg . The castle was destroyed by Landgrave Heinrich I of Hesse in the Mainz-Hessian conflict in 1269/72 .
