Beberbeck Castle and Domain

Geographical location

Beberbeck Castle is located on the western edge of the Reinhardswald on Kreisstraße 55 between Hofgeismar and Sababurg . The Hessian state domain Beberbeck with extensive farm buildings and a small farm workers' settlement borders directly on the castle and castle park in a southeastern direction .

history

In 1823 Wilhelm II named the horse breeding that had existed in Beberbeck since 1490 as a "model institute for state horse breeding". In 1827 he commissioned his court architect Johann Conrad Bromeis to plan and build a hunting lodge at this location. The building, also known as the Princely House in plans, was completed in 1829. At the same time, an ensemble of five other buildings was built by Bromeis for horse breeding by 1831. After the annexation of the Electorate of Hesse-Kassel by Prussia in 1866, the new rulers expanded the stud further. As early as 1870 Beberbeck was one of the five main Prussian stud farms. The castle continued to be used for representative purposes and to accommodate hunting parties.

In 1929, state horse breeding was dissolved and the stud was converted into the Hessian state domain that still exists today. The castle has been used as a nursing home since then . The institution is responsible for the “Evangelical Altenhilfe Gesundbrunnen” in Hofgeismar.

At the beginning of the 21st century, Beberbeck Castle was to become part of the planned Schloss-Beberbeck Resort. The then mayor Hofgeismars Henner Sattler and the architect Tom Krause played a key role in the planning . The documentary filmmaker Klaus Stern shot the multiple award-winning documentary Henner's Dream - Europe's largest tourism project - about the project, which was declared to have failed at the end of 2010 .

The lock

Beberbeck Castle: rear front with rotunda

Bromeis built the castle in the classicism style as a two-storey, plastered building above a basement made of natural stone blocks. The eleven-axis front facing the small park is dominated by a three-axis central projection with an attached triangular gable with gold inscription and the electoral coat of arms. The inscription reads WILHELM II KURF. & COUNTRY GR. ZH GROSH. ZF ERB. MDCCCXXIX (Wilhelm II. Elector and Landgrave of Hesse, Grand Duke of Frankfurt built in 1829).

The central hipped roof building is flanked by two lower, seven-axis side wings with arched windows on the ground floor. The main entrance with three arched doors is on the mezzanine floor of the central projectile. Access is via a double-curved flight of stairs with wrought-iron railings.

The rear side of the street is dominated by a round, two-story part of the building, on the upper floor of which there is a domed hall with impressive acoustics. A special feature is the painted coffered ceiling in this room. Light blue octagons and silver rosettes regularly stand out against a pink background and create the illusion of a special room height. The dome hall equipped with an organ is used as a meeting room, for church services and concerts.

Castle Park

The castle, which borders on the Reinhardswald with its rear side, opens its entrance side to a small park with loose trees from the time of origin in 1828. In the line of sight between the outside staircase and the upper domain building there is a stone round basin with a water fountain . To the right and left of it there is a stone bench, the back of which is decorated with the inscription WK 1828 and a crown protruding upwards.
