Beberbeck is a northeastern part of Hofgeismar in the Reinhardswald in the northern Hessian district of Kassel . It has 84 inhabitants (as of 2018). The Hofgeismar district of Sababurg with the Sababurg of the same name belongs to Beberbeck .

Geographical location

Beberbeck Castle and Domain

Beberbeck is located on a vast area of fields and meadows surrounded by the forests of the Reinhardswald low mountain range . Between Hombressen in the south and Gottsbüren in the north, it is about 4.2 km west-southwest of the Sababurg . The small Nieme flows past to the east and flows a little further down the stream into the Holzape .

A little north past Beberbeck  , the "Sleeping Beauty Route" of the German Fairy Tale Route leads along Kreisstraße 55, which connects Hofgeismar in the south-west with Sababurg in the east . The Schnitterkaserne, Ziegelhütte and Revierforsterei Beberbeck are located on this street near the confluence of the Nieme and Holzape.

Townscape and economy

With five streets, Beberbeck is one of the smallest villages in the region. As a 888  hectare state domain, mainly agriculture and forestry are practiced here. The main crops are: sugar beets , wheat , rye and barley . Cattle breeding is also very important. The average production of over 10,000 liters of milk per cow was honored on June 3, 2005 by the Minister of Agriculture, Wilhelm Dietzel.

history

Beberbeck was first mentioned in a document in 978. The state domain Beberbeck was once one of the five main Prussian stud farms , which included Trakehnen , Neustadt an der Dosse , Graditz and Altefeld . The first news of horse breeding at this location comes from 1490. There is talk of wild horses , an expression for breeding horses that were allowed to move freely. In 1571 Landgrave Wilhelm IV had a 130 hectare zoo set up that enclosed the Sababurg. Elector Wilhelm II issued a resolution in 1823 in which Beberbeck was named the model institute for state horse breeding. In the years 1837 to 1840 Johann Conrad Bromeis built the Beberbeck Castle between the Landstrasse and the domain on behalf of the Elector .

From 1870 the main stud was under Prussian administration. In 1918 there was a change from 110 warmblood mares to 60 warmblood mares and 60 cold blood mares. The reason for this was that more draft animals were urgently needed in agriculture. In 1929 the main stud in Beberbeck was dissolved and continued as the Hessian state domain. The castle was expanded into a retirement and nursing home and is run by the Evangelical Elderly Aid in Hofgeismar.

On December 31, 1970, Beberbeck was incorporated into the city of Hofgeismar.

Attractions

The stud farm with palace and palace park, built by Johann Conrad Bromeis, the court architect of Elector Wilhelm II., In its completeness as a classical ensemble, represents Beberbeck's main attraction .

The old hat oaks in the Feldmark around Beberbeck are also worth seeing , including the " Big Margaret " at Beberbeck Castle.

In the village cemetery there is a memorial with the inscription: Dedicated to the chief magistrate Bernhard Ulrichs, who is highly deserved for agriculture in Hesse, in grateful recognition by professional colleagues.

Sights near Beberbeck include the Sababurg in the Reinhardswald with the Sababurg zoo attached to it and the nearby Sababurg primeval forest .

Planned Schloss-Beberbeck-Resort

Since 2005 the city of Hofgeismar had plans to turn Beberbeck into a tourism park (holiday resort ). With an investment sum of 420 million euros, several golf courses, an inland lake, luxurious hotels, 600 residential units in holiday villages and a riding facility with a trotting track and polo field were to be built. The political authorities, in particular Hofgeismar's mayor Heinrich Sattler and the former Hessian Prime Minister Roland Koch , supported this project and were prepared to support it with subsidies. Domain Beberbeck , which was founded in 2007 and is affiliated to the city of Hofgeismar , was granted the right to market around 900 hectares of domain space by the state government. Funds from private investors were required for the realization and the planned intervention in the listed building complex and in the historically grown, sensitive cultural landscape was controversial. There were considerable doubts as to whether the project could be economically successful and whether it would lead to a sustainable revitalization of the tourism sector in Northern Hesse. The "Action Alliance Beberbeck", in which nature conservation associations such as the Hessian Society for Ornithology and Nature Conservation and the Association for Environment and Nature Conservation Germany participated, rejected the project because it interferes with the habitats of rare wild animals such as wild cats and the disappearance of old tree-lined avenues feared. The signing of contracts with a group of investors not known by name was postponed several times in the course of 2010 without any result.

From 2005 to 2008, the filmmaker Klaus Stern shot a documentary entitled Henner's Dream - The largest tourism project in Europe about the holiday resort project. The film ran for six months in Kassel and was broadcast on ZDF on November 16, 2009 . For this, Stern received the Adolf Grimme Prize 2010 and the Hessian Film Prize 2009.

On December 17, 2010, Mayor Sattler declared the "Ferienresort Beberbeck" project to be ended on December 31, 2010 in front of the Hofgeismar city council, as no investor was found. On January 8, 2011, it was announced that the holding company had filed for bankruptcy. For the city of Hofgeismar, this can result in the guarantees given becoming due. The loss for the city of Hofgeismar should amount to 3 to 5 million euros.
