The Holzape (not to be confused with the shorter wood ka pe is) as the longest river in Reinhardswald a 22.8 km long, south-east and orographic right inflow of Diemel in northern Hesse Kassel district ( Germany ).
course
The Holzape rises and runs in the Reinhardswald. Its source is located on the western slope of the Staufenberg ( 472.2 m above sea level ), around 420 m southwest of its highest point. It is about 410 m above sea level.
The Holzape meanders through an idyllic, natural, almost uninhabited and mostly forest-lined valley, whereby it flows without canals in a predominantly northwestern direction. A few hundred meters after its source, the brook crosses a shared section of the German Fairy Tale Route and the Reinhardswald Cycle Path , after which it runs through the Upper Holzapetal nature reserve .
Then the Holzape passes the hamlet of Beberbeck (district of Hofgeismar ) located in an extensive open space to the northeast and takes the one coming from the south or Beberbeck between the "Forsthaus Ziegelhütte" and the building of the "Revierförsterei Beberbeck", which are east of the "Schnitterkaserne" Bach Nieme (on the left).
The Holzape then flows through a narrow section of the valley again lined with forest, after which a little further north the Donnebach, coming from the southeast or from the direction of Sababurg , joins (on the right). Then it runs past the “Keßpfuhl” ponds that it feeds, and where a water treatment plant for drinking water supply was inaugurated in 2003 . Shortly thereafter, the brook passes about 1 km west of Gottsbüren (district of Trendelburg ), which is in an agricultural area , where it takes in the water of the Fulda brook flowing through this village (on the right).
Below Gottsbüren, the Holzape flows through about 1.7 km north of Friedrichsfeld , a district of Trendelburg above the flowing water on a plateau with fields and meadows , south of the Steinkopf ( 271.1 m ) again through a narrow, forest-lined section of the valley; the Friedrichsfeld flood retention basin was supposed to be built there (see section flood protection ). Here it runs through the Holzapetal nature reserve and squeezes between the Moosberg ( 185 m ) in the northeast and the Brautstein ( 209.4 m ) in the southwest.
After flowing through this valley section or the Reinhardswald and passing the Gutsmühle Wülmersen, for whose operation (closed in 1904) the Mühlbach branching off from the Holzape was created, the flowing water is bridged by the Holzapeviadukt of the former Carlsbahn .
Thereafter, the Holzape flows directly to west Wülmersen (small area of Trendelburg) or on the " water lock Wülmersen" over to eventually slightly below thereof to about 100 m height in the coming from the south Weser creek Diemel to open .
Catchment area and tributaries
The tributaries of the Holzape, whose catchment area covers 59.123 km², include with the respective orographic allocation (l = left-hand side; r = right-hand side), the length in kilometers (km), and the confluence area with Holzapebach kilometers downstream considered:
- Nieme (l; 4.75 km; between "Forsthaus Ziegelhütte", "Revierförsterei Beberbeck" and "Schnitterkaserne"; km 14.75)
- Donnebach (r; 7.55 km; below "Revierförsterrei Beberbeck" or southwest of Gottsbüren; km 10.45)
- Fuldebach (r; 6.65 km; below the "Keßpfuhl" ponds or west of Gottsbüren; km 8.6)
Watershed
The headwaters of the Holzape are located on the watershed of the Diemel and Weser , part of the Diemel-Eder / Fulda / Weser watershed : While the Holzape drains north-west over the Diemel into the Weser, the short streams that flow north, east or arise south of the Staufenberg, to the east directly into the Weser.
Flood protection
For flood protection , there were plans in the late 1960s and early 1970s to build the around 54 ha large flood retention basin Friedrichsfeld in the area of the lower reaches of the mostly water-rich Holzape below Friedrichsfeld and above Wülmersen . The total storage space of the basin, which would normally have been dammed with 3.9 million m³ of water, was calculated to be 5.8 million m³, resulting in 1.9 million m³ of flood retention space for a precipitation area of 57.8 km². The basin, for which an earth and stone embankment dam was planned, was never built, so that there is still a nature and water protection area in the narrow valley above Gutsmühle Wülmersen .
Protected areas
Somewhat below the Holzapequelle lies the nature reserve (NSG) Oberes Holzapetal (CDDA no. 164878; designated 1993; 1.34 km² in size). Further down, a valley area between Gottsbüren and Wülmersen is part of the “Holzapetal” NSG ( CDDA no. 81924; 1980; 89 ha ). Both NSGs are part of the fauna-flora-habitat area Holzapetal (FFH no. 4422-350; 2.54 km²). Large parts of the Bachtal belong to the landscape protection area (LSG) landscape components and landscape parts in the Hofgeismar district ( CDDA -Nr. 378519; 1938; 28.42 km²), southwest of the upper reaches of the brook lies the LSG Oberes Holzapetal (CDDA-Nr. 378650; 1993; 33 ha), and areas close to the mouth belong to the LSG Auenverbund Diemel (CDDA no. 378399; 1994; 13.29 km²).
Sights / Activities
Sights not far from or directly on the Holzape include the Reinhardswald, the Sababurg with the Sababurg zoo and the nearby Sababurg primeval forest , the cloudbursts near Trendelburg and the “ Wasserschloss Wülmersen”. You can also hike or cycle on some forest paths that run roughly parallel to the Holzape.
