Altefeld is a district of the municipality of Herleshausen in the Werra-Meißner district in Hesse .
history
The village was first mentioned in a document in 1326, when Ludwig von Baumbach held hersfeld fiefdom in the place. The place came in 1432 with the Principality of Hersfeld to the Landgraviate of Hesse and from 1545 to 1824 was a Hessian fief of the Treusch von Buttlar family . Administratively, the place belonged from 1585 to the landgrave's office of Sontra , from 1818 to the justice office of Netra and from 1821 to the district of Eschwege .
The place was significantly shaped from 1913 by the establishment of the Altefeld main stud , the facilities of which are widely distributed over the local area and which still dominate the townscape today. With the stud, the place received, among other things, its own school and a community nurse. In the 1910s, a hydropower turbine was put into operation on the Ölbach to provide power to the site and the stud .
On December 1, 1970, as part of the regional reform in Hesse, the municipalities of Altefeld, Archfeld, Breitzbach, Herleshausen (with Frauenborn), Holzhausen, Markershausen, Nesselröden, Unhausen, Willershausen and Wommen voluntarily merged to form the larger municipality of Herleshausen.

In 1913, the chief stableman of the Prussian stud administration, Burchard von Oettingen , had a main stud built in Altefeld . Today the Altefeld main stud is privately owned.
