Burchard of Oettingen
Burchard von Oettingen (born September 30, 1850 in Meddum, Estonia , † May 2, 1923 in Estonia) was the Royal Prussian Oberlandstallmeister.
family
He came from the noble family of Oettingen, originally from Westphalia , and was the son of August von Oettingen (1823-1908), manorial estate owner, Livonian land marshal , district administrator , civil governor and mayor of Riga and his wife Ida von Wilcken (1827-1893). Burchard von Oettingen had two brothers and two sisters.
Oettingen married Anna Freiin von Wolff (1857–1925) in 1878. The couple had two children, Marissa Emily (1879–1969) and Otto Krafft (1880–1917) who was at the Kgl. prussia. Reg. 155 stood.
Life
After attending school at the Livonian knight high school in Birkenruh near Wenden in Livonia , he studied mathematics in Dorpat . Although he was subject to the Russian Tsar, he reported to the 1st Prussian. Guard Field Artillery Regiment, where he was retired as Rittmeister in 1889 . During his time as a soldier he was a successful racing rider and had been closely associated with the equestrian industry since his early youth. So he quit his military service to join the Prussian stud administration. In Gudwallen he began his work as a state stable master in 1888 and in 1892 took over the management of the Beberbeck main stud in Hesse . In 1893 he traveled to North America for horse breeding studies. Several trips devoted to horse breeding took him through the vastness of the Siberian steppes to the rear of Mongolia. His career was crowned by his appointment as head stableman and stud manager at the center of Prussian horse breeding in Trakehnen . In the period from 1895 to 1911, Burchard von Oettingen was not only busy with breeding, but also with the extensive redesign of the stud buildings. In 1913 he built the extensive model stud Altefeld based on the model of Trakehnen , taking into account his diverse experiences on the eastern Hessian plateau of the Ringgau .
Trakehnen
A particularly big task was the rebuilding of Trakehnen, which was destroyed by the Russians during the First World War . He had very good connections to the high presidium in Königsberg and to the government in Berlin , so that the necessary funds for the reconstruction were quickly made available. As Trakehner Oberlandstallmeister, Burchard von Oettingen was replaced in 1920 by his son-in-law Kurt Graf Sponeck , who had married his daughter Marissa. In East Prussia he introduced training and examination work for the stallions of the state studs. He revived hunting with the pack in Trakehnen, and he kept the stud book with a lot of commitment and energy.
Under the leadership of Oettingen, the stud gained worldwide fame and recognition.
Horse breeding
He was particularly fond of breeding the finest horses , the thoroughbreds . Burchard von Oettingen achieved a great success with the purchase of the thoroughbred Dark Ronald . In 1913, the Prussian Stud Management had to pay the high price of 500,000 gold marks for this exceptional stallion . The most successful stallion line by Surumu xx to date goes back directly to Dark Ronald and illustrates the influence of Dark Ronald then and now.
In 1911, Burchard von Oettingen was appointed to the Prussian Ministry of Agriculture, Domains and Forests and in 1912 was appointed Prussian Oberlandstallmeister. His publications received a lot of attention and are still among the standard works on horse breeding .
