The marriage resulted in six sons and four daughters, of whom five sons and three daughters survived childhood.
Life
Buttlar first studied at the Bergakademie Freiberg , then at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen . After completing his studies, Buttlar took over the family property in the Elberberg and Ziegenhagen forest districts in northern Hesse, which mainly consisted of forests . As a conservative member of the Knighthood for the Diemelstrom from 1833 to 1848, he was a member of the Electoral Hessian Estates Assembly , and in 1851 he represented Electoral Hesse at the Ministerial Conference in Dresden .
As a senior in the Buttlar zu Elberberg family, he managed the family property in Northern Hesse, in particular the Elberberg castle and estate and the Riede castle and estate . In Elbenberg he had today's classicist castle built according to his plans from 1834.
Buttlar developed a new type of planting method for tree seedlings, which was quickly accepted in specialist circles, spread quickly and entered the standard forestry literature. In this process, he used an iron tool he had invented to place 1 to 3-year-old seedlings with bared roots in conical holes. Using this method, he planted more than five million seedlings in his forests. In his publication Forstkultur -verfahren in its application for the high mixed forest and its consequences , published in 1853 , he advocated artificial forest regeneration and for the high mixed forest.
