The Goldflussbrunnen (also: Goldfluss-Brunnenskulptur ) is a fountain that was located from 1991 to 2009 on Kärntner Straße in Vienna's 1st district, Inner City .

History and description

The fountain, made by Hans Muhr from tauern green serpentine from the Großvenediger , measures around 2.5 meters by 1.3 meters and is around 1.9 meters high. The unworked stone block weighed about 18.5 tons.

At the top of the sculpture, the water exits at a total of eight (2 × 4 openings) and flows via guide channels, some of which are lined with gold bronze, into the catch basin, which is a few centimeters deep and sunk into the ground. Below the fountain there is an invisible water basin with a capacity of around two cubic meters.

In order to be able to operate the fountain in winter as well, it was equipped with a thermostatic valve in addition to the automatic circulation and cleaning system. This enabled operation down to a temperature of minus four degrees Celsius and only switched off the system at lower temperatures.

The gold river fountain was unveiled on June 10, 1991 at its location in Kärntner Strasse and replaced the “Nasser Stein” fountain originally located here since 1974 and created by Wilhelm Holzbauer , which is located on the forecourt of the East Social Medical Center in the 22nd Viennese district of Donaustadt was moved. In the course of the redesign of the pedestrian zone Kärntner Straße in 2009, the gold river fountain was removed. It was later placed in the Arts Trail sculpture park in Singapore as a gift from the City of Vienna .
