Zoonavena is a genus of birdsinthe sailor family (Apodidae). The three species of this genus are quite small sailors. The distribution areas are far apart, the Hindu swift occurs on the Indian subcontinent , while the other two speciesare endemic to islands west and east of Africa, respectively: the Sao Tomé sailor on São Tomé and Príncipe , the Malegasse sailor on Madagascar and the Comoros .

features

The body length is between 10 centimeters for the Sao Tomé sailor and 12 centimeters for the Malegasse sailor . All representatives of the genus have a similar plumage color, they are dark with the exception of light areas on the under tail-coverts , the belly and the rump .

The toes are arranged anisodactyl . The tail is just cut off. The "tail thorns", the quills protruding over the tails of the control feathers , are relatively thin compared to other representatives of the Chaeturini tribe .

Systematics

Originally the Malegasse sailor was the only species of the genus, the other species were assigned to the genus Chaetura . David Lack formed subgroups for the species-rich genus Chaetura at the time and oriented himself on the plumage and distribution, but without naming these subgroups, he assigned the three Zoonavena species today to one another. RK Brooke split the genre in 1970 according to Lacks' proposal.

The closest related genus is Rhaphidura , Lack even saw the Sao Tomé sailor as a subspecies of the swamp swift (Rhaphidura sabini), Brooke did not share this point of view due to the large differences in plumage.

The following species are included in the genus:
