Gregory Mathews

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gregory Macalister Mathews CBE (born September 10, 1876 in Biamble , Castlereagh River , New South Wales , † March 27, 1949 in Winchester ) was an Australian ornithologist .

Live and act

At the age of 10, he and his family moved to Singleton on the Hunter River and later to Parramatta City in 1889 . Here he first went to Singleton Grammar School and then to King's School in Parramatta.

After living on a cattle ranch about 130 kilometers away from Charters Towers for a few years , he married the wealthy widow Cecile Marian Wynne (1865–1938) on May 6, 1902 in Parramatta. White, daughter of Henry Charles White (1837–1905) and niece of James White (1828–1890). Cecile Marian brought son Richard Owen Wynne and daughter Marion Dulcie Wynne from her marriage to John Wynne.

The family moved to England, the country where his interest in ornithology grew and where he began his monumental twelve-volume work Birds of Australia . Each volume appeared in several parts. In addition, five supplements were published. Witmer Stone (1866–1939) wrote a detailed review of the complete works in The Auk in 1927 .

In 1914 he visited his native Australia and the United States . His next visit to Australia was from 1939 to 1946.

Gregory Mathews made his fortune with mining stocks. His secretary Tom Iredale (1880–1972) supported him for many years in his ornithological studies. Though Iredale, an amateur ornithologist and malacologist , made a substantial contribution to the books of Mathews, little appeared under either name.

He was chairman of the British Ornithologists' Club from 1935 to 1938 and was awarded the CBE (Commander of the British Empire) for his services to ornithology in 1939 . Since 1910 he was a member ( Fellow ) of the Royal Society of Edinburgh .

Gregory Mathews was elected a Fellow of the Royal Australasian Ornithologists Union in 1939 and was chairman of that association from 1946 to 1947. In 1939 he donated his extensive ornithological library to the National Library of Australia . The Mathews red-tailed black cockatoo bears his name in his honor.

Dedication names

In 1911 Tom Iredale described a new subspecies under the name Cincloramphus rufescens mathewsi , which today has the status of a species and is listed as the rust-rump lark warbler ( Cincloramphus mathewsi ). Since the holotype came from the collection of GM Mathews, the specific epithet was dedicated to it.

When Alfred Louis Laubmann (1886-1965) reviewed The Austral Avian Record by Mathews in 1927 , he also described a new subspecies of the green fisherman ( Chloroceryle americana mathewsii ). Also Erwin Stresemann used his name for a subspecies of black-naped tern ( Sterna sumatrana mathewsi ), by referring to Methews's book Birds of Australia.

The subspecies of the stub beak ( Smicrornis brevirostris mathewsi ) described by Samuel Albert White in 1915 is now generally considered a synonym for the nominate form.

It is not entirely clear to whom Mathews dedicated a synonym for Ardea sumatrana sumatrana as a subspecies of the black heron Ardea sumatrana mathewsae . This could be his wife Cecile Marian Mathews (1865–1938), as the ending -ae indicates a female person.
