The black-necked tern ( Sterna sumatrana ) is a species of tern that is common in the Indian Ocean , Southeast Asia and the Australo-Pacific region.

features

The black-naped tern is 34 to 37 cm long and has a wingspan of about 60 cm. The top is colored light gray. The underside is white and sometimes tinged with pink. A black neck and eye line stand out from the white head and neck. The beak is black with a yellow tip, feet and legs are black. The white tail is forked deep, the central tail feathers are gray.

Young birds are striped grayish-brown, their heads are gray-brown speckled with a black spot on the neck. Her hand wings are gray and lined with white inside. The beak is yellow, legs and feet are yellow-brown.

Distribution and existence

The black-naped tern is found mainly on tropical islands. It prefers lagoons as a habitat and is rarely found inland. In the Indian Ocean there are breeding occurrences on Mayotte , the Comoros , the Maldives , the Seychelles and the Chagos Archipelago . In Southeast Asia, the distribution extends from the coasts of the Malay Peninsula and Indochina north to southern China , in the east of the Indonesian region from the southern Philippines to the Banda Sea . In addition, the species breeds on numerous Pacific islands in and around Micronesia - northwards to the Northern Marianas , eastwards to the Cook Islands and southwards to New Caledonia . In Australia it breeds in the Great Barrier Reef area .

The International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) classifies the black-necked tern as Least Concern (LC).
