Pseudobulweria is a genus of sea birds from the petrel family. The four recent representatives of this genus have long been placed in the genus of the hook shearwater ( Pterodroma )despite morphological differences. On the basis of analyzes of the mtDNA cytochrome-b sequences, however, it was found that these taxa are more closely related to the shearwaters of the genus Puffinus than to the hook shearwaters. Therefore, they were transferred in 1998 to thegenus Pseudobulweria createdby Gregory Mathews in 1936.

Three species of Pseudobulweria are classified as critically endangered by the IUCN. The Macgillivray's Petrel ( Pseudobulweria macgillivrayi ) and the Beck's Petrel ( Pseudobulweria becki ) are among the rarest and least explored seabirds in the world. Both species were considered lost for a long time until they were rediscovered in 1984 and 2007, respectively. Rats and feral cats are the main threats. In the case of the Mascarene petrel ( Pseudobulweria aterrima ) from the island of Réunion there are also fatal accidents with lighting systems. The Tahitian petrel ( Pseudobulweria rostrata ) is still relatively common and is on the early warning list ( near threatened ). The St. Helena giant petrel , which is only known from subfossil bone material from the island of St. Helena , was also placed in this genus. However, a study from 2014 again sees it in the genus Pterodroma .

Bones of a previously undescribed extinct Pseudobulweria species have been found on Taravai , Agakauitai and Mangareva . Rodrigues' subfossil bones have been assigned to the Mascarene Petrel.
