Alfred Louis Laubmann
Alfred Louis Laubmann mostly Alfred Laubmann (born October 20, 1886 in Kaufbeuren , † October 18, 1965 in Munich ) was a German ornithologist .
Live and act
His father was the businessman Eugen Laubmann. His mother's name was Ida geb. Shepherd. From 1891 to 1897 he attended elementary school in Kaufbeuren and then moved to the Wilhelmsgymnasium in Munich , which he graduated from high school in 1906. After leaving school, he studied natural sciences with a focus on zoology from 1906 to 1911 at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . Here he did his doctorate under Richard von Hertwig with the dissertation research on the skin sensory organs decapoder crabs from the group of caridids . In 1912 he married Elisabeth Mayer. During the summer semester of 1910, Laubmann stayed at the Biologique de Roscoff station as part of his doctorate on marine zoological studies . In the spring of 1911 he was commissioned by the management of the Zoological State Collection to process the bird hides that Gottfried Merzbacher (1843–1926) had collected in Tian Shan in 1907 and 1908 . He published the results of the investigations in 1914. Although he lived in Munich, he never lost sight of his homeland, the Allgäu , and kept publishing about the avifauna from this region.
He worked at the Zoological State Collection for over a decade under the direction of Carl Eduard Hellmayr as a scientific assistant. During this time, Hellmayr also employed Erwin Stresemann . When Hellmayer moved to the United States in 1922 , Laubmann was promoted to head of the ornithological department. In 1926 he was promoted to curator and in 1927 he was awarded the title of professor. He donated his own valuable bird collection, which consisted of approx. 6000 bellows, to the state. Among the most important publications were the two-volume work The Birds of Paraguay and his various studies on the kingfishers .
His research dealt mainly with systematic questions, so that even today there are species and subspecies that are associated with his name. Nevertheless, he also took care of the faunistic aspects. Together with Carl Renz and his wife Elisabeth, he went on an expedition to Greece , for which he had his boss Ludwig Döderlein given leave of absence. The result of the trip was published in 1927 under the title Zur Ornithologie der Ionischen Insel . The publications Ornithological Observations from the Lake Maisinger See or Cranes on the southern edge of Munich show that he just as much enjoyed dealing with his immediate surroundings.
He joined the Ornithological Society in Bavaria as early as 1907. Between 1913 and 1921 he acted there as deputy secretary, from 1922 as general secretary, editor and editor of negotiations of the Ornithological Society in Bavaria and Anzeiger der Ornithological Society in Bavaria . It is thanks to him that the level of the magazines was kept high and the publication organs of society were saved from two world wars. At the same time he was in constant contact with other respected ornithologists from home and abroad. One of his friends became Walter Wüst in 1928 , who at that time reported to him as a student from the Ismaninger pond area and finally wrote an obituary for the deceased. For another, Josef Gengler , he wrote an obituary in 1933. In January 1962 he gave up responsibility for the magazines and Einhard Bezzel took over the successor.
In 1951 Laubmann took his well-deserved retirement, but without losing sight of ornithology. Gerd Diesselhorst took over his position at the Zoological State Collection .
Memberships and honors
Laubmann was a member of the International Ornithological Committee , since 1925 honorary member of the Société Ornithologique de France , since 1930 of the Club van Nederlandse Vogelkundigen , since 1935 of the Hungarian Ornithological Institute , the Natural Science Association for Swabia in Augsburg , since 1923 a corresponding member of the American Ornithologists' Union , since 1933 corresponding member of the Sociedad Ornitológica del Plata and since 1935 member of the advisory board of the German Ornithological Society .
