Adolf of Jordans

Adolf Petrus Margareta Maria Joseph Hubertus von Jordans (born April 29, 1892 in Lüftelberg ; † May 23, 1974 in Pörtschach , Carinthia ) was a German ornithologist and university professor . For many years he headed the Koenig Zoological Museum in Bonn.

Life and activities

Adolf von Jordans came from a Rhenish family. He was the youngest of five children of the manor owner Karl Ferdinand von Jordans (1854–1897) and his wife Paula, b. from Zuydtwyck. His grandfather was Karl Theodor von Jordans, who was ennobled in 1842. Jordan's eldest brother was the private scholar Carl von Jordans (1883–1950). His other siblings were Isabella Ferdinande Friederike Walburga Lazarus Maria Josephine Huberta (born December 17, 1885 in Lüftelberg), nun in the order of the Borromean Sisters, Hubertus Friederikus Josephus Ignatius Maria Norbertus (born June 6, 1887 in Lüftelberg), who inherited the family estate (208 ha) and the Caritas sister Klara Gisbert Felicitas Maria Josephine Huberta (born January 14, 1890 in Lüftelberg).

In 1912 he met Alexander Koenig , who supported him as a patron in the following years. At the post of curator and deputy director, he was involved in setting up the Bonn ornithological private museum from 1921.

Von Jordans devoted his dissertation in 1914 to the topic of the bird fauna of Mallorca, taking into account Menorca and the Pityuses . His role model and ornithological teacher was Otto Kleinschmidt .

For decades his scientific work focused on the study of geographical variations. In particular, the bird world of the Mediterranean region was the subject of his research. Jordans is the author of over 40 large and small publications that appeared in specialist journals between 1913 and 1970.

After the death of Alexander Koenig, von Jordans took over the management of the private collections. From 1947 to 1957 he was the director of the museum. In 1951 he was appointed professor.

After reaching the age limit, he lived at Morenhoven Castle. After an operation on his larynx in 1957, his health deteriorated. He died surprisingly after an operation on the bowel while on vacation in Carinthia.

On October 1, 1921, Jordans married Maria v. Savigny (born August 22, 1898 in Munich; t September 3, 1974 in Bonn), a daughter of the papal secret chamberlain Clemens von Savigny and Martha Kannen.

The daughters Isabella Julia Paula Maria Luise Lüftildis Caroline (born August 25, 1922 in Bonn) and Hedwig Paula Carola Maria Sophia Lüftildis (born May 15, 1924 in Bonn) and the sons Hermann Dietrich Felix Marcellus Agnes Maria (* 16 January 1926 in Bonn), Hans Carl Hubertus Klara Maria Nicomedes (born September 15, 1929 in Bonn) and Leo Franziskus Maria Columbanus (born November 21, 1932 in Bonn).
