Oscar Neumann

Oscar Rudolph Neumann (born September 3, 1867 in Berlin , † May 17, 1946 in Chicago ) was a German ornithologist and mammalogist .

Life

Neumann took an early interest in natural history and especially in the bird world. In November 1892 he began his first journey within Africa, which took him from Tanga (in the German-administered zone of East Africa) via northern Tanganyica , southern Uganda , Kenya and Lake Victoria to the residence Kwa of King Mtesa of Uganda on the north bank of the lake. He described the results and souvenirs of his trip in the Journal für Ornithologie and exhibited them in the Zoological Museum Berlin . His descriptions, which appeared from 1898 to 1900, were entitled Contributions to the Bird Fauna of East and Central Africa .

Neumann started a two-year journey through Somaliland and southern Ethiopia in 1899 at the side of his colleague Carlo von Erlanger . From Zeila on the Gulf of Aden we went to Addis Ababa . Here they parted ways and Neumann went alone to Shoah to find a new route to Sudan from there. Erlanger, however, opted for the route to Lake Rudolfsee . Neumann's travel description appeared in The Geographical Journal in 1902 under the title From the Somali coast through Southern Ethiopia to the Sudan . The results - a description of 1300 species of birds - were published again in relevant scientific journals. He published many ornithological results from 1904 to 1906 in the Journal for Ornithology under the title Birds of Shoah and South Ethiopia . In addition to the bird species, Neumann's harvest included 1,000 mammals and around 30,000 insects.

Through his travels Neumann had learned a lot about the distribution of different varieties and their ecology . So it was not surprising that he was one of the first to sympathize with the subspecies concept introduced by Ernst Hartert (1859–1933). In articles such as new and rare species of the genus "Sigmodus" Temm. or He consistently implemented the concept using the African yellow-bellied Zosterops shapes .

Many of his collectibles were from other people such as the zoologist Paul Matschie (1861-1926), the arthropod researcher Karl Kraepelin (1848-1915), the entomologist Walther Horn (1871-1939), the malacologist Johannes Thiele (1860-1935), the herpetologist Ernst Ahl (1898–1943) or the zoologist Franz Hilgendorf (1839–1904).

From 1908, financial difficulties prompted Neumann to accept a job at the Walter Rothschild Zoological Museum in Tring . Here Neumann published several sustainable studies on African birds, all of which appeared in the journal Bulletin of the British Ornithologists' Club . But this plan also failed after a few months, as Rothschild also got into financial difficulties. So Neumann decided to work as a stockbroker in Berlin for the next 25 years . Despite the turning point in his career, he continued to publish a considerable number of scientific articles. In 1915 he decided to work with birds from other parts of the world in addition to the avifauna from Africa.

When Hitler came to power, he was banned from trading on the stock exchange. So he shifted his work to the field of systematic taxonomy . At the same time he encouraged local bird and mammal collectors in many countries to visit certain areas and islands. He studied their collections in the Zoological Museum of Berlin and then distributed them to various museums, with large parts going to museums in the United States . A particularly successful expedition under his aegis was that of Johannes J. Menden on the islands of Taliabu and Peling near the east coast of Celebes .

Due to his Jewish origins, he was finally banned from entering the Zoological Museum in Berlin, where he had worked for 40 years as a voluntary worker and donor. His friend Julius Riemer (1880–1958) took him in at his home, created a job for him and provided him with literature and material. Later on, Riemer organized the escape from Berlin, so that he escaped to America with the last possible means of transport via Spain. His escape took him to Chicago via Cuba in 1941, where he worked as a curator at the Field Museum of Natural History for the last years of his life . Large parts of his collections are now in the Julius Riemer Museum in Wittenberg.

In the end almost deaf and blind, Neumann, who was never married, died after a brief illness.

Memberships

From 1886 he was a member of the German Ornithological Society . In 1897 Neumann was elected a member of the British Ornithologists' Union (BOU), a membership he had to give up in 1910 due to financial difficulties. In 1928 he became a corresponding fellow of the American Ornithologists' Union and in 1929 a foreign member of the BOU .

Dedication names

Chiloglanis neumanni

At the 146th meeting of the British Ornithologists' Club in 1908, in which Neumann also took part, Walter Rothschild, 2nd Baron Rothschild, introduced a new species of bird under the basionym Sylvietta neumanni . Today the species is known under the name Trugtesia ( Hemitesia neumanni ). The common name Neumann’s Warbler has also established itself in English . In the same meeting, Boyd Francis Alexander (1873–1910) honored him in the scientific name of Neumannstar ( Onychognathus neumanni ) (Basionym: Amydrus neumanni ). His name can also be found in the bird subspecies of the gray- rump singing hawk ( Melierax metabates neumanni ) Hartert, E , 1914, the yellow-bellied fruit pigeon ( Ptilinopus solomonensis neumanni ) Hartert, E , 1926, the papuean chicken ( Gallinula tenebrosa neumanni ) Hartert, E , 1930 , the Blassschnabeltokos ( tockus pallidirostris neumanni ) ( Reichenow , 1894) and the pointed tail parakeet ( Aratinga acuticaudata neumanni ) Blake & Traylor 1947

The common name Neumann's Gazelle found its way into English-language literature for the Arabian coastal gazelle ( Gazella erlangeri ) described by Neumann in 1906 . In 1874, Matschie named Neumann's kusu rat Arvicanthis neumanni and a subspecies of the ibex Raphicerus campestris neumanni after their discoverer.

Kraepelin dedicated the name to him in 1903 in the species Zeria neumanni , which belongs to the genus of roller spiders . Also in the current quick catfish ( Chiloglanis belonging) Type Chiloglanis neumanni Boulenger , 1911 belonging to the genus Nothobranchius belonging kind Nothobranchius neumanni ( Hilgendorf , 1905), 1911, of the Kiemenfüßern belonging kind Streptocephalus neumanni Thiele , 1904 and of the genuine frogs belonging to the species Ptychadena neumanni ( Ahl ), 1924 is a tribute to its discoverer.

Not named after Oscar Neumann are a species of the Neumann pike Epiplatys neumanni Berkenkamp , 1993, the gillfoot species Chirocephalus neumanni Hartland-Rowe , 1967 and the species Hoplopleura neumanni Fahrenholz , which belongs to the real animal lice ( Anoplura ) , 1919. Epiplatys neumanni is Dr. Werner Neumann from Zwickau, the author of the book Die Hechtlinge , Chirocephalus neumanni Professor Jehuda Neumann (1915–1993) and Hoplopleura neumanni dedicated to the French parasitologist Louis Georges Neumann (1846–1930).
