The rapids catfish ( Chiloglanis ) is a genus of the African catfish family Mochokidae . Rapids catfish live in rapids and fast flowing rivers and streams in the Nile region and in tropical West Africa.
features
Rapids catfish are three to ten centimeters long and differ from Synodontis mainly by the lower sucking mouth, which is reminiscent of the sucking mouth of the South American armored catfish (Loricaridae) in form and function . The sucking mouth is surrounded by thick lips covered with papillae and serves the fish and the like. a. to attach to stones, wood or plants to protect against drifting. The teeth on the premaxillary and vomer are conical, those in the lower jaw are curved and movable. The lower jaw teeth are concentrated on the symphysis . The mouth is surrounded by three pairs of short, featherless barbels . Rapids catfish have a slightly flattened, elongated body, a relatively large head with small, high-set eyes. The swim bladder is reduced and partially surrounded by elongated vertebral processes. The fin spine of the pectoral fin is only weakly sawed or not at all.
Rapids catfish live on algae and the small organisms in them.
