Between 1884 and 1888 he published the German-language magazine for the entire ornithology . 1894–1903 his main work Magyarország madarai (The Birds of Hungary), a richly illustrated classic of ornithology, which was used as an identification book for many years. He went on numerous exploration and collection trips through Hungary and the surrounding countries. From 1895–1896 he collected 125 species on an expedition to Ceylon, on a second expedition in 1911 he traveled through Sudan and the Blue Nile , but had to break off the trip prematurely because of malaria.
