The Blue-throated Roller ( Eurystomus gularis ), and Blue-throated Roller or Blue-throated Roller called one within the family of European Roller (Coraciidae) for generic Eurystomus .

features

The bluethroat roller is around 25 cm tall and weighs 82–118 g, it looks plump with a large, dark maroon head and neck. The beak is light yellow, the eye dark. The top is maroon, the outer feathers of the relatively long wings and the tail are blue. It is similar to the cinnamon roller , but is slightly smaller and has blue on the throat as a characteristic distinguishing feature. The young bird does not have a throat patch yet, it is brownish overall, the beak is dark gray and the belly is bluish.

distribution and habitat

The preferred habitat in Africa includes rainforest , secondary forest , also villages and hills south of the Sahara .

nutrition

It feeds mainly on insects , mainly ants ( Crematogaster and weaver ants ), likes to stay in tree tops and hunt while flying.

Reproduction

The bluethroat roller lays its eggs between February and May. They occur in pairs or in smaller groups.

The bluethroat roller is considered not endangered ( least concern ).
