Carlo von Erlanger
Carlo Freiherr von Erlanger actually Carl Viktor Heinrich Freiherr von Erlanger (born September 5, 1872 in Nieder-Ingelheim , † September 4, 1904 near Salzburg ) was a German explorer and ornithologist .
Life
Carlo von Erlanger was the youngest son of the banker Wilhelm Hermann Carl von Erlanger and his wife Caroline née Bernus. From 1891 Erlanger studied ornithology at the University of Lausanne . During this time his first expedition to North Africa took place , which took him four months through the Tunisian desert. After his return, von Erlanger deepened his studies in Cambridge and Berlin .
In the winter of 1896/1897 he set out on a second North Africa expedition. After his return in the spring of 1897, he initially devoted himself to evaluating the trip, but shortly afterwards began planning a third expedition that would take him through the British protected areas in Somaliland and East Africa . He began this journey in 1899. Together with Oscar Neumann , he toured East Africa for two years. Stations included Zeyla , Harar and Addis Ababa as well as the land of Ennia and Arussi Galla .
During this time Erlanger collected over 20,000 insects , more than 10,000 bird hides and other animals.
Carlo von Erlanger died in a car accident near Salzburg the day before his 32nd birthday. His body was brought home and buried in the family grave there in the Nieder-Ingelheim cemetery.
In 1917 Erlanger's collection was split up by his mother. The Senckenberg Museum received a large part . A part went to the city of Nieder-Ingelheim, which took this as an opportunity to open its first museum.
