Life

The Villa Carolina, 1903

He was the second eldest son of Raphael Freiherr von Erlanger and the younger brother of Frédéric Emile Baron von Erlanger (1832-1911).

Wilhelm Hermann Carl Freiherr von Erlanger studied law in Heidelberg and received his doctorate. He became a lawyer and notary, later an active landowner and worked as a legal advisor for his father's banking house Erlanger & Söhne.

In 1859 he married the just 17-year-old daughter Caroline (1843-1918) of the Frankfurt senator and wealthy citizen Franz von Bernus . Two months before the wedding, Erlanger bought an estate in Nieder-Ingelheim with 49 properties belonging to it. Both built this into a representative residence with the residence "Villa Carolina" and a corresponding park and settled there. The young woman is said to have said to her husband: “Wilhelm, we'll buy as far as the Rhine!” The property was correspondingly large. Lookout points were created on our own premises, such as the Karolinenhöhe on the Rabenkopf and a stone house called Rheinklause. The model here was the Tell Chapel on Lake Lucerne . Submerged interior paintings were created by Frankfurt artists. Today the Rheinklause is an economy called Anglerklause and is managed by the Angelsportverein Rheinland. In a will, the London- born Espérance Baroness von Erlanger (1870-1944), daughter of the Frankfurt stepbrother Ludwig Freiherr von Erlanger , inherited the property, her husband Alexander Prince von Solms-Braunfels (November 4, 1855 Podebrady Castle / today Poděbrady ) . The Villa Carolina was demolished as early as 1938 . Espérance bequeathed the property to her unmarried daughters Princess Mathilde von Solms-Braunfels (1894–1962) and Princess Friederike von Solms-Braunfels (1896–1954), who then sold it to Albert Boehringer , the owner of the chemical company Boehringer Ingelheim .

In 1872 he was raised to the rank of baron.

The eldest son Franz Emil Alexander Freiherr von Erlanger served with the Uhlan Guard, wagered a fortune, was excluded from inheritance and moved abroad because of betting debts. Franz died in Nice on July 31, 1918 . His much younger Spanish wife Christina, born Grottero, committed suicide in Barcelona on February 7, 1932 .

The younger son Carl Viktor Heinrich Freiherr von Erlanger, called Carlo von Erlanger , became a recognized zoologist and Africa researcher, but was already killed in a car accident in Salzburg in 1904 .

After the death of the youngest brother Ludwig Gottlieb Friedrich von Erlanger in 1898 and after the accidental death of his son Carlo von Erlanger in 1904, the long-time CEO of Dresdner Bank Eugen Gutmann took over the Erlanger & Sons bank in 1904. This formed the basis for the new Frankfurt branch of Dresdner Bank.
