The red-necked spurfowl ( Francolinus afer ) is a type of species of Frankoline from the family of pheasant-like (Phasianidae). There are seven subspecies.
features
It is 25–38 cm long, with significant size differences between the subspecies. Its plumage is overall dark - brown on the upper side, black on the lower body with gray and white stripes. The beak , the mostly bare skin of the face as well as the neck and legs are bright red.
distribution
Like most francolin, it is only common in Africa . He lives in central Africa and along the east coast of Tanzania .
Way of life
The Rotkehlfrankolin is a watchful species and always seeks protection in high vegetation. To eat, it also dares to go into open terrain such as arable land, if there is undergrowth or thicket nearby. Its nest is a bare hollow in tall grass or scrub, the female lays 3–9 eggs .
Subspecies
According to the IOC World Bird List, seven subspecies are known. These are:
- F. a. harterti Reichenow , 1909 occurs in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo , in Rwanda , in Burundi and in northwestern Tanzania .
- F. a. cranchii ( Leach & Koenig, KD , 1818) is present in the south of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, in central Angola and from western Zambia via central Tanzania to western Kenya and Uganda .
- F. a. leucoparaeus ( Fischer, GA & Reichenow , 1884) This subspecies is present in southeastern Kenya and northern Tanzania.
- F. a. melanogaster Neumann , 1898 This subspecies is found in eastern Tanzania via northern Mozambique and northeastern Zambia.
- F. a. afer ( Statius Müller , 1776) Nominatform is native to western Angola and northwestern Namibia .
- F. a. swynnertoni Sclater, WL , 1921 This subspecies can be found in eastern Zimbabwe and Mozambique.
- F. a. castaneiventer Gunning & Roberts , 1911 Its distribution area extends over the south and east of South Africa .
