Jan Willem Boudewyn Gunning (born September 3, 1860 in Hilversum , † June 23, 1913 in Pretoria ) was a Dutch agricultural scientist , ornithologist and director of the Transvaal Museum and the zoological garden in Pretoria. He was also a knight of the Ordre du Mérite agricole .

Live and act

Gunning was the second son of the Dutch theologian Johannes Hermanus Gunning (1829-1905), who was a professor at the University of Amsterdam and the University of Leiden . His mother's name was originally Johanna Jacoba Hoog (1826–1904). His siblings were Johannes Hermanus Gunning (1858–1940), Aletta Lamberta Gunning (1859–1838), Maria Lambertha Gunning (1862–1939), Jacomina Marianne Elisabeth Gunning (1863–1912), Françoise Caroline Gunning (1864–1954), Arnoldine Pauline Gunning (1866–1931) and Johanna Adriana Jacoba Gunning (1867–1940).

Jan Willem Boudewyn Gunning was trained in the Netherlands, France and Germany. In the Netherlands he attended the universities of Amsterdam and Leiden. He did his doctor of medicine (MD) at the University of Jena . He finally moved to South Africa in 1884, where he married Suzanna Johanna Neethling (1862-1888) that same year. She was the daughter of Marthinus Laurentius Neethling (1825–1913), an influential winemaker from the Stellenbosch area . When Gunnings first wife died in 1888, she left him with three children. In 1889 he married Ellen Elisabeth Dubbin (1867–), who came from Bethulie , and with whom he fathered three sons and two daughters.

Gunning practiced as a doctor in Bethulie, Smithfield and the Cape Colony until 1892 before moving to Pretoria. Here he was appointed director of the newly founded Transvaal Museum. It is thanks to his great dedication that the Pretoria Zoo was opened in 1898. From this he also became the first director. A year later, a suitable plot of land was acquired, so that at last a decent zoological garden could emerge, which is now known as the Transvaal Zoological Garden .

Another passion of Gunning was agricultural science. He was Vice President of the Transvaal Agricultural Union , the Pretoria Agricultural Society , the Transvaal Kennel Club and the Pretoria Homing Society .

Gunning supported the establishment of the South African Ornithologists' Union (SAOU). With the help of a font campaign that he initiated together with William Lutley Sclater and John Alexander Strachey Bucknill (1873-1926), it was finally founded on April 8, 1904. So Sclater became first president and Gunning one of the vice presidents. In the absence of Sclater, Gunning took over the chairmanship of the third meeting of the SAOU, which took place on August 25, 1906 in Pretoria. In 1910, until his death, Gunning was even president of the SAOU. He was also president of the Transvaal Biological Society founded in 1907 , which later became the Transvaal Philosophical Society . Gunning was a Fellow of the Zoological Society (FZS).

Dedication names

In 1909, dedicated to him Alwin Karl Haagner the epithet of Blauflügelrötel ( Sheppardia gunningi ). So it says in his article:

"... ... and for the second a new genus seems necessary to which I have also attached the name of its collector, giving to it the specific name of gunningi, in honor of Dr. JWB Gunning, Director of the Transvaal Museum, who is now my chief. "

The genus Gunningia , newly introduced by Austin Roberts in 1922, is now a synonym for the genus Euchloridia .
