Life

Josef Gengler was born in Erlangen as the son of the privy councilor and university professor Heinrich Gottfried Philipp Gengler . After school he studied medicine and natural sciences and after completing his studies began to work as a military doctor in the Bavarian army. He worked in the Metz and Erlangen garrisons and was appointed senior staff doctor in 1910 . At the beginning of the First World War he took over the management of a hospital train and rose to the rank of senior physician as the war progressed . After the end of the First World War, Gengler settled in Erlangen, where, in addition to his medical work, he carried out extensive ornithological research. In addition, he dealt with the folklore and local history of the Erlangen region. Gengler died of a stroke on April 27, 1931 in Erlangen , after his health had previously been bad.

From childhood on, Gengler was enthusiastic about the local bird life. Therefore, he studied natural sciences in parallel to medicine and dealt intensively with ornithology. In 1871, Gengler was one of the first members of the newly founded Ornithological Association in Munich , from which the Ornithological Society of Bavaria later emerged. He was heavily involved in the Bavarian Ornithological Society and was the editor of the materials on Bavarian ornithology , which appeared from 1899 to 1914 as a supplement to the negotiations of the Bavarian Ornithological Society . During his time as a military doctor, he continued his research in south-eastern Europe and published several works on the bird world of the Balkans after the end of the war. Gengler put on an extensive collection of more than 3000 bird skins , which he donated to the zoological collection of the State of Bavaria in 1928.
